While not every book becomes a best seller, if the book is a quality product and is marketed well, most can make a profit regardless of the publishing method. However, the author that sees their book published then sits back and awaits success, and avoids marketing their book, or themselves, will be sorely disappointed.
In today’s book marketing environment, regardless of publishing method, prolonged author action is definitely required. With hundreds of books released every day, a new author must call attention to themselves, and their book, to see any success. Many authors do a good job of marketing their books, but fail to market themselves, fail to create a personality worthy of producing a best seller.
New authors face the same, age old, problem of many product manufacturers, how do you inform the public that the new product, (book), exists, and give the public enough information to interest them enough to buy the product, (the book). The answer is, and has always been, marketing. Marketing of the author’s persona, and each book they have published, to gain name popularity, a reputation for excellence, style and a positive value of their works. Many new authors mistakenly push their new book, while avoiding the spotlight. While marketing their new book needs to be done, failing to establish a personal presents in the media, for themselves, is missing the golden opportunity.
Any best selling author has become a household name, and their style and the quality of their work has developed a reputation for them that precedes any new book. The results are that their newest book will be received with open arms by publishers, the media, and most importantly by book consumers who will buy the newest book release, because of the writer’s reputation. New authors need to start developing this form of marketing. Simply because it will pay them well, over time, to do so. Developing a wide readers base, starting with your very first book, can be fairly easy considering the tools available today. The Internet is an excellent way to introduce yourself, and to start creating a personality for yourself. At the same time that you are marketing your fist book.
Writers who become published authors do so for three main reasons. They have something important to contribute, they wish for a writing career, and wanting to become famous. Of course, there could be other reasons, but these are the top three. Most reasons are also excellent reasons to market the author’s name, and personality, because it propels the author towards reaching those goals.
It is never too early to start marketing ‘your personality’ and developing ‘your reputation’. Your first book helps create your writer’s reputation. Those that do purchase and read your book will probably share what they think about the book with others. Good or bad you will become what you produce as a writer. Producing a well planned, well edited and interesting book, a quality product, should always be the bare minimum accepted by any writer. As everything you write will add to your ‘writer’s reputation.
There are no rules stating that you can not improve your writer’s reputation by marketing your name. In fact you can somewhat control how you are perceived by the media and readers, all to your betterment.
You will need to answer a few questions to start setting up your “personality”, like what do you wish to be known for, which attributes should I project most, who do I need to reach, and how will I reach them. From those answers develop a ‘plan of action’. A step by step plan, outlining goals and how to reach them. From launching your marketing campaign to infinity, do everything according to your plan. Project your selected personal attributes in your plan, and never deviate from what you wish everyone to know about you. You cannot completely control what people will say about you and your writing, but you can control the way many perceive you as a writer and as a personality. It is also wise to evaluate your plan from time to time, possibly on a yearly basis, looking for ways to improve upon the plan to increase your results.
Everyone is different, so your questions and answers will differ from those of another author. This difference is a blessing, be yourself, be controversial, be helpful, be an authority, but be something, and be proud of that. Market that in your projected personality, and take advantage of a golden opportunity.
